Rescue Me ID: 17-11-22-00271Three female rats (female)

Small Mammal    Age: Adult

I adopted these three little girls a year and a half ago, and I'm very attached, but unfortunately I've developed cumulative allergies that have escalated into chronic asthma. I had a severe asthma attack this week, and am still feeling the effects. It makes me really sad to say this, but I have to look for a new home for them. If you're interested in potentially adopting these sisters, please get in touch. Rats are curious, clean animals that are endlessly fascinated by their environments and love to play (they chase string like cats do). They typically live 2-3 years, and these ones are 1.5 years old, so this would not be a super long ... (Read More)commitment. I'm looking for someone who'd be willing to give them a good quality of life (keeping the cage clean, giving them fresh fruit/veg sometimes, occasionally playing with them). One of them is very friendly and likes cuddles, but the other two are more hands-off. Ideally I would still be able to visit sometimes; I would be on hand for advice, as well as veterinary assistance when they near the end of their lives. (Less)

Animal ID: Zika's Litter - Born 11.8.17Rat

Small Mammal    Age: Baby

**BABY RATS FOR ADOPTION** (and 2 MAMAS TOO!!) S. HUNTINGTON, NY. Babies are various ages, with some available for adoption early-mid December. Babies will NOT be sent to their new homes until they stop nursing on their own and show independence. (There are multiple litters available of various ages so older/younger babies may be available - just ask!) This is 1 of 2 litters born on 11/8/17 to two rescue moms. The mother for this litter is named 'Fever' Mom's will also be considered for adoption, with preference given to anyone who also takes a little girl. There are 3 boys and 7 girls in Zika's litter. 3 Girls & 1 Boy that I believe ... (Read More)will become 'Siamese' colored, with lighter bodies and brown smudges on their nose and often at the base of their tail. 2 Boys that are mostly black, but with white markings on their stomach All 4 Black capped/black hooded are girls. **Preference will be for babies that are Black and/or White be paired with a Siamese sibling for adoption** They have all been handled daily, and as they age they will be getting exposure to things like running water, pots & pans knocking into each other, flushing toilets, vacuums, and will even meet the dogs. In short, I'm trying to ensure they know that the world is not scary and us humans won't hurt them or put them in danger - which will help them settle into their new homes faster and pose less of a risk of getting scared and jumping from someone (especially kids) only to get loose in a home/apartment. Adoption fee is $15 per baby. I will WAIVE THE FEE upon receiving ANY of the following: - proof of a good setup including cage with small bar spacing (1/2' minimum - 3/4' max spacing between bars), climbing toys, play toys, etc... - proof of another rat in the household with a safe & fun cage setup - a vet reference from a small exotics vet or dog/cat vet to show that you are, or have been, a good pet owner. **adoption donations would be greatly appreciated, but are not mandatory. I do cover everything out of pocket, including new cages when needed, food, bedding, vetting for mom and/or babies if needed, and often travel for delivering them to new homes** I will do my best to match each adopter with rats of their color choice and who have temperaments best suited to those adopter's home-life and experience level. No adopters will be allowed to adopt a boy AND a girl and multiple adoptions must be same sex. Adoptions of single rats are fine as long as there is another rat in the household already (rats are social animals and should have companionship) If you are interested, or would like more information, please TEXT me at 917-635-5510 Calls from unknown #s are rarely answered, and callers will be unable to leave a voicemail. You are also welcome to email me at 3dogs712@gmail.com ***MOMS*** If you are curious about the moms (Fever or Zika) please do not hesitate to ask! For all I will provide additional pictures, and even some video, of the little guys to interested adopters. I can also get potential adopters added to a Facebook page that will be regularly updated with pics & videos. Meetups can be arranged for anyone hoping to select their babies in person before they are ready to go home with you. Preferred pickup for these babies is in South Huntington, or Lindenhurst, NY. For adopters unable to get out to the island, just let me know where you live. I am very willing to drive them in to you (sorry folks, no Manhattan). Depending on your location and distance I may request a reimbursement for any tolls. I have in the past delivered to meetup points in CT and NJ, so do not hesitate to ask. Coloring is mostly determinable from skin coloring, but in a few days as their fuzz grows in we will know better. We will also be able to sex them to determine the boys from the girls soon (some people can tell right away, but I've never been able to until about 8-9 days old) They will be regularly handled and as they age they will be getting exposure to all sorts of sounds and people (they were the surprise litter of a ... (Read More)very sweet female rat that had been adopted by a classroom of 4-year-olds just a week earlier). They will also be comfortable traveling as they will go home with the teacher every weekend & holiday. ***PLEASE NOTE THAT these babies are not physically located with me, but with one of my adopters who took a baby girl from a rescue litter, and also took a very sweet female who was a very last minute rescue that had supposedly been all alone since having her previous babies take as feeders. As a result, it wasn't known that she was pregnant. I will be handling most of the adoption process, although the adopter who has the babies will of course be involved with letting us know temperaments of each, providing updated pics & video, and helping to fit each rat into the most suitable home**** Video of Ruth Mae nursing; if you cannot view please let me know as interested adopters can be added to the Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/marina.r.smith.9/videos/10103566004609972/ Adoption fee is $15 per baby, but I will HAPPILY WAIVE FEE with ANY of the following (although donations of any amount are greatly appreciated - they will be put toward helping other rats live out their years in good homes, being spoiled) : - proof of a good setup including cage with small bar spacing (1/2' minimum - 3/4' max spacing between bars), climbing toys, play toys, etc... - proof of another rat in the household with a safe & fun cage setup - a vet reference from a small exotics vet or dog/cat vet to show that you are, or have been, a good pet owner. I will do my best to match each adopter with rats of their coloring choice whenever possible. No adopters will be allowed to adopt a boy AND a girl; multiple adoptions must be same sex. Rescue Me ID: 17-10-26-00199Ferret, 1 yr old (female)

Small Mammal    Age: Young Adult

I have a one yr old spayed ferret girl named Gypsy who badly needs a new home. She's very tame and sweet. She doesn't nip, very docile and easy to handle. Likes other animals, but hasn't been around other ferrets so I'm not sure how she'd be with others. She is very tiny for a ferret though, so she'd probably do best with a friend close to her size. I'm heartbroken to let her go, but my son has developed some serious health issues and we can no longer keep her. I've been looking to rehome her for months and tried several times to find her a home online, but most reply's were college students in transitional living, people looking for a free ... (Read More)pet or people with no vet references. She is a really sweet girl- by far the sweetest, most gentle ferret I've ever met. I need to know she is going to a good, permanent home. I'm asking for a $50 fee to ward off people looking to resell her, but if you have solid vet references and ferret experience I'm definitely willing to negotiate if it means she's going to a great home. If you think you could be her new forever home, please text me! (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting Rodents & Small Mammal in New York
Rodents & Small Mammals can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. Rodents are small mammals with four sharp teeth they use to eat, gnaw wood, and defend themselves. Several types of rodents are popular pets, such as chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs. Even rats are kept as pets! Rodents are often purchased as gifts for children. Sadly, however, many owners of rodent pets do not know how to care for them properly, and young children are often unprepared for the responsibility of having a pet. Families may not approach the purchase of a rodent with the same level of commitment they would have to a pet dog or cat. Mistakes can be made regarding the genders of a pair of rodents, resulting in a litter of unexpected babies. Some owners of rodents simply turn their pets loose when they get tired of them, which usually leads to the death of the animals, since they are not adapted to life in the wild. Free to good home ads can result in a rodent being used for snake food. There are some rodent rescue operations out there that can receive discarded pets, but these places tend to become overloaded due to so many people getting rid of their rodents. Please approach all decisions to get a pet with a long-term commitment, and pursue adoption rather than buying a rodent from a pet store.
